A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
