This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for time.
It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
