The United Kingdom and the United States have finalized a important trade agreement that will preserve no import taxes on UK drug products entering the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to raise expenditure on drugs through the public health system. This pledge secures that tariffs on these key products will stay at nothing for a duration of the next three years.

This deal follows recent threats to hike import taxes on branded pharmaceutical products, with potential rates mentioned up to 100%.

"This deal between the Britain reinforces the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and brings much-needed balance to American-British drug exports," an announcement said.

Trade Importance

Drugs constitute one of the UK's largest export categories to the United States, which is easily the primary destination for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures show that in the one-year period prior to last September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products valued at £11.1bn to the US. This value made up nearly one-fifth of British export trade in that span.

"This guarantee secures work, stimulates funding and paves the way for the UK to become a global hub for biotech and pharma," a government official remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The agreement includes several specific changes from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it judges new treatments to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a goal to double total NHS spending on medicines from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage drug companies must pay back to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at 15%. Last year, rebates exceeded 20%.

Broader Context

The deal comes amid a long-running row between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were intensified by arguments that US consumers were paying several times more for the equivalent treatments than patients in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several major drug company projects in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while substantial funding commitments have been announced toward American operations.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS must spend more on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had decreased as a share of its resources over the previous ten-year period.
